Development and self-reliance: tendencies

Kathy Calvin: UN Foundation CEO on the Future of Development Aid(From DevEx)

On what drives development:

There are revolutions in technology, in finance, but most of all we’re seeing a revolution in people wanting to takecontrol of their own lives.

We see governmenst taking stand against international aid, by for example prohibiting international organizations from partnering with international rather than local NGOs. I think we will meet similar requirments for the equipment provided: local production and partnership and use of local human resources will be a stronger requirement in the future. This will also affect how we think about design, and to open for self-reliance through our development process. It requrires broad knowledge and preparedeness to know what excists in the context where an emergency occurs.
